Sheet Winches

Installing the correct sheet winch for your sailboat is crucial to smoother sailing. We stock a range of brands that cover different speeds and sizes. When shopping with Boat Boating, you find products supplied by brands such as Lewmar, Ronstan and Harken.

Bias Boating Stocks a Wide Range of Sheet Winches

Sheet winches apply friction to a rope, offering a tight grip when in use. Two people should operate a winch unless it has a jaw-like feature known as self-tailing winches.

Our items are made from high-quality materials and are manufactured to last. Generally, our sheet winches are virtually maintenance-free.

Tips to Consider When Using Sheet Winches

Using a winch system can be physically demanding, and it’s worth knowing how best to utilise this device to reduce stress and output.

  1. When using your winch, you want to start at the bottom with your rope. Wrap in a clockwise direction roughly three or four times - be sure not to overlap your rope to avoid riding turn.
  2. Winches are designed to turn in a clockwise direction. If you can’t remember the direction, turn beforehand.
  3. Insert your winch handle to assist with pulling the rope tight.
  4. The final step is to cleat your rope and remove the handle.

If you’re unsure how to use a winch correctly, it’s worth talking to your captain or someone experienced before heading out on the water.
