Life jackets are an essential piece of safety equipment for anyone on the water, and ensuring every passenger on board has one is mandatory for on-water safety. Despite life jackets being a common occurrence on board most vessels, most boat owners are unaware of when their jackets need servicing.

If you’ve ever wondered how often life jackets need servicing, we’ve compiled everything you need to know.

Understanding How Often Life Jackets Need Servicing

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) recommends that life jackets are serviced at least once every 12 months, or after any significant use, by an accredited service agent. These service agents can be found through the manufacturer or by contacting your local marine safety agency.

The frequency of servicing your life jacket depends on several factors, including the type of life jacket, how often it's used, and the environmental conditions it's exposed to. In addition to completing professional servicing, it’s important to always complete a self-check of your life jacket prior to use and to check for any signs of wear or malfunction.

Types of Life jackets and their Servicing Needs

There are several types of lifejackets, and each requires specific maintenance and servicing procedures, including:

  1. Automatic inflatable life jackets:

Automatic inflatable life jackets have an inflator mechanism that activates when it comes into contact with water. As such, they require more frequent inspections. In addition to a visual inspection, the auto inflation mechanism will be inspected as well as the oral inflator, Co2 cylinder and all other features such as straps, buckles and more.

  2. Manual inflatable life jackets:

Manual inflatable life jackets require the wearer to activate the inflator mechanism by pulling a cord. These life jackets also need to be serviced at least once a year or after each use. The inspection will include refitting the cylinder as well as a visual inspection, oral inflator check, Co2 cylinder inspection and a check of any buckles, straps and other features.

  3. Waistbelt inflatable devices:

Waist Belt inflatable devices are similar to manual inflatable life jackets, but they are worn around the waist instead of over the shoulders. They also require the user to activate the inflator mechanism by pulling a cord. These devices need to be serviced at least once a year or after each use. The inspection includes a visual inspection, oral inflator check, Co2 cylinder inspection, as well as refitting the cylinder.

  4. General PFDs

General PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) are non-inflatable life jackets that are designed to keep the wearer afloat. These life jackets need to be inspected for damage and wear and tear at least once a year or when signs of malfunction appear. The inspection includes a visual inspection and checking for any signs of wear and tear.
